Welcome to Vienna

The City of Vienna, located in the heart of Europe, offers the visitor a wide range of cultural and historical sites. There are museums for every taste, from the exhibition of archaeological treasures at the Museum of Natural History to avantgarde works at the Museum of Modern Art or the Kunsthaus Wien.

Furthermore, exotic and unknown works, trinkets and curiosities are on display at many of Vienna's small museums. In the city where so much music was written, you can also enjoy compositions from the baroque to the present at Vienna's most beautiful concert venues during the "Klangbogen", part of Vienna's Summer of Music (June to September), while at the Jazz Festival in July you can hear sessions with stars from all over the world. The Music Film Festival in July and August on Rathausplatz in front of the City Hall also boasts star studded casts, showing unusual cinema and TV productions.

Theater fans who are interested in exciting productions will enjoy classical and avantgarde theater on Vienna's fifty or so stages. Every summer the Roman ruins in the park of Schönbrunn Palace become a setting for exciting opera productions. In the park of Schönbrunn Palace you will also find the Zoo. Or if you like to take a break from culture and history, visit the Wurstelprater, Vienna's biggest amusement park or venture out into the country. The rolling hills of the Vienna-Woods extend along the northern and western perimeter of the city.

Vienna offers culinary delights for every taste. You can enjoy international cuisine or typical Viennese dishes. Visit one of Vienna's many coffeehouses and treat yourself to one of the typical coffee specialties, accompanied by a typical Viennese pastry. Or bring a busy day to a close with a visit to a Heurigen on the outskirts of the city.

The Palais Pallavicini is one of the most interesting palaces in Vienna, displaying particularly and distinctly the transition from baroque t classicism at the close of the 18th century. It lies in the center of Vienna and forms, together with the imperial Hofburg and the Spanish Riding School, a harmonious setting. Its festive halls with their elegant setting are often the scene of receptions given by the Austrian government in honor of visiting royalty and heads of state.

The Evening at a Viennese Heurigen, on July 10, 8.30 pm will take place at the Heurigen Mayer on Pfarrplatz in Heiligenstadt (a part of the 19th district of Vienna) which is located in a house Ludwig van Beethoven lived in during the summer of 1817. During an earlier stay in Heiligenstadt, Beethoven composed his 6th Symphony (Pastoral), and while staying in this house, he worked on his greatest opus, the 9th Symphony (Choral). The Mayer family has lived in Grinzing and Heiligenstadt since 1683. All the wine they serve originates completely from their family owned vineyards. An abundant cold and warm buffet of selected delicacies serves as a good "foundation" for one or more glasses of excellent wine. Following an old tradition, only wine, mineral water, and lemonade are served at a Heurigen. You cannot get beer or coffee.
