A Design Project to Create an Autonomous, Competitive Robot System

This project involves teams of four students in the planning, design, construction, programming, testing and debugging of an autonomous mobile robot. Robots will compete against each other in pairs. The competition will take place in the hockey arena containing sixteen 4.5 cm diameter balls half painted red and half painted blue. The aim of the Red Team robot is to hit all of the red balls into a common goal and the Blue Team robot aims to hit all of the blue balls into the goal. The winning team is the one whose robot scores the most points. Infringement of the competition rules will incur demerit points. Each team will be supplied with an "Arduino Uno" microcomputer board which can interface to a range of sensors and motors. This computer is programmable in a C-like computer language. Also, a number of different sensors and actuators are included in the kit of parts provided to each team.
