ECE3091-2015 Engineering Design: Martian Colony Construction Robots Project

A Design Project to Create an Autonomous, Competitive Robot System

This project involves teams of four students in the planning, design, construction, programming, testing and debugging of an autonomous mobile robot. The robot will, by using the plans and construction modules provided (which are coloured foam disks), construct buildings on a simulated Martian landscape. At the start of a competition round, each robot will be placed in an assigned starting area, will scan the construction plan, and start the construction in its assigned construction zone. The robot will fetch the required disks from a pile at the center of the arena. After 6 minutes, the robot will receive a score of +1 points for every correctly placed foam disk. Infringement of the competition rules will incur negative demerit points or disqualification.

Each team will be supplied with a "Monash Glomerida Board" which can interface to a range of sensors and motors. Also, a camera, various sensors and actuators are included in the kit of parts provided to each team.
