OpenFlow

The Software Defined Telecommunication Laboratory of Monash University is currently experimenting with using OpenFlow to simulate various network situation on physical network hardware.

OpenFlow is a network protocol that provides users the means to control the routing of data through a network switch. This is accomplished by providing users access to an API on the network switch which can be controlled by an OpenFlow controller. The OpenFlow controller can then manage the traffic through each switch in the network based on data and by adding and removing "flows" from the switch.
