The aim of the Smart Packet Radio project was to design and implement a packet radio solution to replace the existing packet radio network. The new radios are to be significantly more advanced than their predecessors, capable to handling the media access control sub-layer on the boards with no instructions from a controller. Additionally, the use of more recent transceiver modules was intended to improve the transmission rate of the radios. It was hoped that these radios would be a permanent replacement for the dated packet radios used by Monash University as research and teaching tools in the future.
