Due to the new SPR board's ability to handle complex operations, it is thus possible to implement an Aloha-inspired MAC sub-layer on the board. This sub-layer can be enabled and disabled at will by the host terminal and deals with many low-level operations. These operations include the detection and retransmission of failed packets, the sending and receiving of ACKs and the collection of retransmission and round trip time statistics. The MAC sub-layer includes an exponential back-off timer for retransmissions, the limit of which can be dynamically set by the host terminal. Additionally, the slot time and number of retransmissions can all by set by the controller terminal through the use of various instructions.
